Hernia surgery: questions to ask before admission
A simple patient-family checklist for consent, anesthesia, billing clarity, infection prevention, and discharge.
Before confirming the surgery
Ask why surgery is needed now, whether alternatives exist, and what type of hernia repair is planned.
- Open or laparoscopic approach?
- Mesh planned or not?
- Expected hospital stay?
- Who is the operating surgeon?
Safety questions
Use these questions to understand preparation and reduce confusion.
- Will an anesthetist review me before surgery?
- What infection-prevention steps are followed?
- What symptoms after discharge are urgent?
- Who do I call if pain or fever increases?
Billing and discharge
Ask for estimated total cost, package inclusions, excluded medicines, implant/mesh cost, and follow-up charges before admission.
Please read: This page is general patient education, not medical advice.
It cannot tell you whether you personally need surgery, because that depends on your examination, your
reports and your medical history. Use it to prepare questions for your own doctor. Never delay treatment
your doctor has advised because of something you read here. In an emergency, call your local emergency
number now — 112 in India, the EU and many other countries, or 108 for an ambulance in India.
Notes from patients and verified doctors
Every note is read by a moderator before it appears. Please do not name any hospital, doctor or staff member, do not post prescriptions or dosages, and do not upload bills or reports here. Write what you learned, what you wish you had asked, or what confused you — that is what helps the next patient.
